Before the Tuscan Sun

Prima che il sole

I spent a wonderful couple of weeks, based in a little villa tucked into a small vineyard in the heart of Tuscany. Everyone seems to think my trips are leisurely ones filled with enjoying the cuisine, wines, people and amazing scenery of the places I am fortunate to visit.... well they are, except for the leisurely part.
My days are filled with many, many, many kilometers behind the wheel exploring and scouting for compositions. I passed this ruin many times over a couple of weeks, but just couldn't seem to make a composition work. I was on my way to another location when I passed it again at least an hour before sunrise. Now, the light in Italy has always struck me for its amazing quality. It's magical. I looked over at the ruin, as I drove past this Sunday morning, and was amazed at the blue haze that hung in the valley in the distance. I was about a kilometer down the dirt road when I decided to back up and take a good look at it. I stepped out of my little hatchback Lancia, and thought, "this might work." I found my viewpoint, set up the camera, focused and calculated the exposure. It would be eight minutes. I tripped the shutter and the low lying foliage very gently swayed, almost imperceptible in the cool predawn air. It was still an hour before sunrise and I had a shot in mind. I didn't want to waste the morning, so I only exposed one sheet of film and moved on. Just goes to show how wrong I can be. Here's to nice surprises and beautiful mornings in Italy!
