Causeway To Paradise

I’ve stopped to enjoy this view countless times as I crossed the causeway to an island paradise, each time feeling transported back in time. Mr. Joe inherited the 460-acre island paradise from his aunt, who bought it in 1927. He placed it in a trust to prevent it from being developed. Selling it would have made him a very wealthy man—its prime Lowcountry real estate—but to him, living there and knowing that future generations would enjoy its immense untouched beauty was priceless. The island—and Mr. Joe—remind me so much of similar experiences at my Uncle Jack’s farm when I was a kid.

Mr. Joe and Ms. Kathleen are gone now. I was fortunate to have met them many years ago and to have shared many good times there: Fourth of July parties, Christmas Eve gatherings—joyful times full of warmth and laughter. Priceless memories to me now. It’s also where I met Stephanie. Mr. Joe was Stephanie’s father’s lifelong friend. Stephanie grew up spending her summers there . Imagine how much fun it must have been.

Mr. Joe’s daughter, Sandra, called one day to offer some burls from a large fallen limb. As I drove out early that Saturday morning to collect them, I once again stopped to marvel at the view. I mentioned to Sandra that I’d always wanted to photograph it. “You are always welcome here,” she said. “I love that view too.” Mr. Joe expressed that same welcome when I thanked him for their hospitality on my first visit.

As with most of my work I waited for the right moment - enjoying the morning light filtering softly through the trees, clouds rolling into the scence from the storms overnight, the mood was still and quiet. I love this time of day. It was July Fourth which seemed very fitting.
